George R.R. Martin is a renowned author born on September 20, 1948, in Bayonne, New Jersey. His creative journey began at a young age, selling monster stories to neighborhood children for pennies, often accompanied by dramatic readings. This early passion for storytelling led him to become a comic book fan and collector, and he started writing fiction for amateur fan magazines. Martin's first professional sale was "The Hero," published in the February 1971 issue of Galaxy, at just 21 years old. He went on to graduate summa cum laude from Northwestern University with a B.S. in Journalism in 1970, and later earned a M.S. in Journalism in 1971. As a conscientious objector, Martin served with VISTA from 1972-1974, and during this time, he also directed chess tournaments for the Continental Chess Association from 1973-1976, and taught journalism at Clarke College from 1976-1978. Throughout the 1970s, he wrote part-time while working in various roles, eventually becoming a full-time writer in 1979. Martin's writing career was supported by his marriage to Gale Burnick in 1975, although they divorced in 1979 without children. As a writer, Martin has remained dedicated to his craft, producing numerous notable works, including the epic fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire.
