Raised in a single-parent household by his mother, Catherine Barnes, and brother Anthony, Derrick's early life was marked by a desire to escape the block through football, music, or entrepreneurship. However, his true passion lay in storytelling. As a fifth-grader, he began writing his first stories, crafting characters and worlds that brought him immense satisfaction. This creative outlet only grew stronger, as he wrote songs, poems, plays, and short stories, devouring books and developing a love for learning. Derrick's educational journey took him from a local community college to Jackson State University, where he earned a Bachelor's degree.
