Benedict Freedman is a mathematician and writer, born in New York City in 1919 to a family with a rich literary tradition. As a high-achieving student, he excelled in accelerated mathematics courses and graduated with honors. At just fourteen, Freedman entered Columbia University as a premed student, but his studies were cut short when his father's sudden passing forced him to reevaluate his path. Undeterred, Freedman pursued independent study in higher mathematics, developing a particular passion for games and recreational mathematics. He also applied his analytical skills to real-world problems, assisting in the writing of a textbook and working as a clerk to a consulting actuary, tackling complex actuarial calculations.
